Confirmation nurtures dynamic and developing faith. It is not an end point, but a milestone along the journey of faith taken with young persons who are seeking to discover a living, growing faith. Typically our confirmands join together during 8th and 9th grades to explore Holy Scripture and Catechism, share in Sacraments and Service, and connect with each other, Christ’s Church and God. Confirmation is taught by the Pastor, the Director of Spiritual Development, and adult small group leaders from the congregation.
Throughout the school year, confirmands meet on Wednesday evenings to share meals and discussion and on Sunday morning to study Scripture and worship God. We also work with mentors from the congregation and travel together to Washington DC to explore issues of poverty and homelessness through the lens of the Lord’s Prayer.
In the spring of the year, we honor our second year confirmation students and their families at a special banquet at which the confirmands share their very personal and unique “Faith Expression Projects.” On Pentecost Sunday, these students affirm their Baptisms. Our prayer is that they will continue to live into the promises they have made: to live among God’s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.
